A Journey Through Sri Lanka’s Flavours

This is Sri Lanka told through food — not as an add-on, but as the main story.

“Spice Routes of Sri Lanka” connects the island’s diverse culinary traditions across regions, from street food culture in Colombo to coastal seafood kitchens, hill country tea experiences, spice gardens, and traditional village cooking.

Each stop introduces a different layer of Sri Lankan cuisine shaped by centuries of cultural influence — Sinhalese, Tamil, Malay, Dutch colonial, and coastal fishing communities — all coming together in one of Asia’s most underrated food destinations.

This journey is designed for travellers who want to understand Sri Lanka through taste, aroma, and hands-on cooking experiences.

Culinary Highlights

  • Colombo's Pettah Market food tour — where every ingredient in the island's cuisine begins

  • Cooking class with a Galle Fort chef — colonial Dutch and Sri Lankan fusion

  • Seafood market to table: catch of the day on the south coast

  • Ella: locally grown tea pairing dinner with a sommelier

  • Kandy: spice garden walk — cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, nutmeg in their natural state

  • Jaffna cuisine cooking class: crab curry, hoppers, mutton rolls (north-bound option)

  • Colombo restaurant crawl: the city's best new kitchens

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Colombo Arrival & Food Introduction

Begin your journey in Colombo with a guided morning tour of Pettah Market, exploring spices, tropical fruit, dried fish, street snacks, and the foundations of Sri Lankan cuisine.

Continue with a cinnamon peeling demonstration at a heritage spice merchant before enjoying dinner at one of Colombo’s leading contemporary Sri Lankan restaurants.

Days 2–3 – Galle & Coastal Kitchen

Travel south to Galle and settle into the coastal culinary atmosphere.

Join a cooking class in Galle Fort focusing on colonial-era Dutch and Sri Lankan fusion dishes. On Day 3, experience a fisherman boat trip followed by a fresh seafood lunch prepared from the day’s catch.

Evening seafood dining in Unawatuna completes the coastal food experience.

Days 4–5 – South Coast Flavours

Explore the evolving food scene along the south coast.

Visit Ahangama’s contemporary dining spaces and experience a hands-on Weligama crab curry cooking session. Continue with a jaggery (palm sugar) production visit and a traditional Sri Lankan sweets workshop showcasing local desserts and techniques.

Days 6–7 – Hill Country Flavours

Travel into Sri Lanka’s tea-growing highlands.

Experience a guided tea tasting session in Nuwara Eliya with food pairing insights before continuing to Ella for a tea garden dinner under the stars.

Participate in a local cooking class featuring hoppers and kottu roti, two of Sri Lanka’s most iconic everyday dishes.

Day 8 – Kandy — Spice Garden & Cultural Feast

Explore Kandy’s spice gardens where cinnamon, cloves, pepper, nutmeg, and vanilla are grown in their natural environment.

In the afternoon, take part in a traditional Kandyan cooking experience followed by a full cultural feast dinner.

Days 9–10 – Sigiriya & Departure

Travel to the Cultural Triangle for a village-based culinary experience near Sigiriya.

Walk through rice paddies, meet local farming families, and enjoy a home-cooked lunch prepared in a traditional village setting.

On Day 10, return to Colombo and end your journey with a final street food breakfast before departure.

Why This Tour is Unique

Sri Lanka’s cuisine is one of Asia’s most diverse yet underexplored culinary traditions, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange.

This journey brings food to the centre of the experience — not as an activity between sightseeing, but as the reason for travel itself.

From bustling markets and spice gardens to coastal kitchens and highland tea estates, every region reveals a new layer of flavour, technique, and tradition.

It is Sri Lanka experienced through taste, culture, and connection.
