Discover Sri Lanka Beyond the Familiar

This journey explores a side of Sri Lanka many travellers never reach — the island’s fascinating northern region where Tamil culture, sacred islands, colonial history, and unique culinary traditions create an experience entirely different from the south.

“The Road to Jaffna” combines the extraordinary landscapes and atmosphere of northern Sri Lanka with the island’s iconic cultural highlights, creating a journey that feels immersive, varied, and deeply rewarding.

From the legendary Colombo–Jaffna railway journey to remote ferry crossings, ancient Hindu temples, elephant safaris, and UNESCO heritage sites, this itinerary reveals a version of Sri Lanka that feels quieter, more layered, and far less travelled.

For travellers seeking culture, history, and discovery beyond the classic tourist route, this is one of Sri Lanka’s most unforgettable journeys.

Key Highlights

  • Jaffna — the Tamil north's extraordinary capital: Hindu temples, colonial fort, unique cuisine

  • Keerimalai hot springs — ancient coastal springs at the island's tip

  • Nainativu Island sacred temples — accessible only by ferry

  • Sigiriya Rock Fortress UNESCO climb

  • Minneriya elephant gathering (seasonal July–October)

  • The Colombo–Jaffna train — one of Sri Lanka's great rail journeys

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Negombo

Airport transfer and overnight stay in Negombo.

Enjoy an easy first evening before beginning the journey north.

Hotel: Comfortable coastal property

Day 2 – Train Journey: Negombo → Jaffna

Begin early for one of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable rail journeys aboard the Colombo–Jaffna express train.

Travel through changing landscapes as the tropical south gradually transforms into the open plains and palmyra-lined scenery of the island’s north — visually and culturally distinct from the rest of Sri Lanka.

Arrive in Jaffna in the evening.

Hotels: Jetwing Jaffna or NorthGate Jaffna ($80–200/night)

Day 3 – Jaffna — Sacred North

Explore the spiritual and coastal landscapes of northern Sri Lanka.

Visit the ancient Keerimalai hot springs overlooking the ocean before taking a short ferry to Nainativu Island, home to the sacred Nagadipa Buddhist Temple and an important Hindu kovil.

The atmosphere here feels remote, spiritual, and rarely visited by international travellers.

Day 4 – Jaffna — Culture & Cuisine

Spend the day discovering Jaffna’s unique culture and history.

Visit the historic Jaffna Fort, explore the local market filled with northern spices and regional produce, and experience an authentic Jaffna cooking class featuring dishes such as crab curry, mutton rolls, and hoppers.

Continue with a visit to Palaly Kovil.

Day 5 – Jaffna → Sigiriya

Travel south toward Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle by road or optional overnight train.

Arrive in Sigiriya and settle in for the evening.

Hotel: Cinnamon Lodge or Hotel Sigiriya

Day 6 – Sigiriya & Dambulla

Climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress early in the morning before temperatures rise.

In the afternoon, visit the UNESCO-listed Dambulla Cave Temple before returning to the hotel for a relaxed evening.

Day 7 – Polonnaruwa & Minneriya

Explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in the morning, discovering royal palace ruins, sacred stupas, and impressive archaeological remains.

Later, continue to Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park for an afternoon jeep safari. During July–October, the elephant gathering creates one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles, while other months still offer reliable elephant sightings.

Day 8 – Colombo & Departure

Travel to Colombo and explore selected city highlights including Gangarama Temple, Galle Face Green, and Independence Square.

Afterward, transfer to the airport for departure.

Why This Tour is Unique

Few Sri Lanka journeys explore Jaffna with this level of depth and focus.

The journey north reveals a completely different side of the island — culturally, visually, and historically — while still combining Sri Lanka’s iconic UNESCO sites and wildlife experiences into one seamless route.

From the legendary rail journey to sacred ferry crossings and authentic northern cuisine, this itinerary offers an experience that feels far more immersive and distinctive than the standard Sri Lanka circuit.
