What makes Diving and snorkelling special.
Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna on the southwest coast suit snorkellers from November to April, when visibility often reaches 15 to 20 metres on calm mornings. Pigeon Island Marine National Park near Nilaveli opens for snorkelling with a park fee of roughly USD 10 plus boat transfer; green turtles are common from June to September on the east coast.
Certified divers use PADI centres in Unawatuna and Trincomalee. The HMS Hermes wreck off Batticaloa sits below 50 metres and needs technical certification, so most leisure divers stay on coral reefs and reef fish instead. Whale-watching boats leave Mirissa around 6:30 am from November to April; blue whale sightings are likely but not guaranteed, and seas can cancel departures two or three mornings a month in peak season.
